In the tradition of Ashtanga yoga, we observe rest days on full and new moons, known as "moon days" or "moondays." This practice, emphasized by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, stems from the understanding that the moon's gravitational pull affects all living things on Earth, including our bodies. Just as the moon influences the ocean's tides, it is believed to affect our subtle energies—during full moons, we may feel energized but potentially scattered, while new moons often bring a more introspective energy. These rest days remind us that yoga isn't just about constant physical exertion, but about finding harmony with natural rhythms and respecting the body's need for recovery.
