Great traditional Mysore studio. Daria excels at alignment and adjustments. Early 6 AM start, but wonderful group energy. Clean space.
Ashtanga Yoga is a traditional system of yoga that was taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India. It's a rigorous style of yoga that follows a specific sequence of postures (asanas) linked together by breath (ujjayi pranayama). The practice combines strength, flexibility, and stamina in a flowing style called vinyasa.
No prior yoga experience is necessary to begin Ashtanga yoga. While it's known for being challenging, everyone starts as a beginner. You'll learn the practice gradually, posture by posture, at your own pace. Our experienced teachers will guide you through the foundational elements before progressing to more advanced poses.
Mysore-style is the traditional way of learning Ashtanga yoga, named after the city in India where Sri K. Pattabhi Jois taught. In a Mysore class, students practice their individual sequences at their own pace while receiving personalized attention from the teacher. This format allows beginners and advanced practitioners to practice together in the same room.
Traditionally, Ashtanga yoga is practiced six days a week, with rest days on Sundays and moon days (full and new moons). However, as a beginner, you might start with 3 times per week and gradually build up your practice. Listen to your body and work with your teacher to establish a sustainable practice schedule.
Please bring:
• A yoga mat
• A small towel
• Comfortable, fitted clothing that allows for movement
• An empty stomach (practice is traditionally done first thing in the morning)
Moon days occur on full and new moons. Following tradition, we take rest on these days because the gravitational pull of the sun and moon affects the water content in our bodies, potentially making us more susceptible to injury. These regular rest days also allow the body time to recover and integrate the practice. See the list of Moondays.
